In my last post, I told a true story from the past about what happened when one of the five drivers got lost after I dispatched a large moving crew to a location only an hour north of our headquarters. The point of the post was this: NEVER ask a man if he knows or understands something because whether he does or not, he’ll say, “Yes.”

Ask him, instead, to validate the communication. In other words, ask him to tell you how he’ll do something or what he’s supposed to do. In the case of our drivers, I should have asked each one to tell me what route he planned to use to drive to the location. Had I validated the communication, I would have discovered that one of the drivers didn’t know how to get there on his own, so if he lost sight of the other trucks, he probably would get lost. I could have prevented the problem by having a helper, who knew the way, sit next to him in the cab.
